Symphony for Solo Cello is a classic coming-of-age story, but with a musical twist. Max Spielman, the hero of Symphony for Solo Cello, follows in the literary footsteps of David Copperfield, Huckleberry Finn, Holden Caulfield, and Harry Potter, but with one crucial difference: Max plays the cello.
On his sixth birthday, Max Spielman receives a cello, and from then on, his life revolves around the instrument. As a musical prodigy, Max faces both the usual challenges of childhood and the unusual challenges of precocious talent. He is watched over by his parents and by his cello teacher Laszlo. He grows up in Oak Park, Illinois and under the spotlights of concert stages. He befriends Jacqueline du Pre and navigates a world filled with
concertos, conductors, and critics. He listens to rock and roll and plays Bach and Dvořák. He loses himself and finds himself in the rich and endlessly fascinating universe of music.
